YR 1 – Rotation 2 : 2D Motion Graphics
After effects Tests.
1) Ease in and out.
The first principle I worked on was ease in and out. I’m a fan of how fluid the squares move within their path and especially love how the pink square first moves back, before going forward as it adds a nice sense of anticipation. This was one of the more favourable principle tests to do in after effects as it was quite simple to make the shapes have a path opposed to moving the frames one by one. If I were to redo this exercise I would try and add some squash and stretch to the pink square, as this exaggerated motion would give the shape more life, remove the sense of realism and therefore make the piece more stylised.
2) Arcs
The next principle, arcs, was also very easy to complete in after effects as it was extremely simple to create a path. I would definitely use after effects in the future to create arcs in my animations as it would save a lot of time. I could experiment further by making the ball move back first like I did with the pink square in the previous technique to add anticipation to the arc of the ball.
3) Squash and Stretch
This may be my favourite introduction to after effects exercise as the ball feels very lively and stylised. I feel I could have exaggerated the stretch at the top a little more when the ball was coming back into place to enhance the jelly like feel I was trying to achieve however, I like how I was able to somewhat maintain the mass of the ball.
4) Heavy Ball
I am a fan the smear on the initial drop of the ball and how it has a few bounces to show the impact of the jump. However, I tried to make the ball roll off screen ad instead it somehow moved down. This is because I messed up when rotating the ball but when I tried to fix this it would ruin something earlier in the animation. This was very frustrating and made me realise how completing a real animation in after effects would be tricky and take practice. I also believe the hassle of making the ball roll of the screen was in vein as it should’ve slowed down and remain in place after the bounces to show the weight of the object ad give the viewer time tom process the event that occurred.
5) Light Ball
I really like my use of squash and stretch in this piece as I feel it accurately depicts the weight of the ball although, over time the ball gradually got smaller and so in future I will need to be more aware of an objects mass.
Overall I found after effects a little difficult but I can definitely see how it may save time when animating. I will try and familiarise myself with the software although I doubt it would be my preferred software as I enjoy hand drawn animation more as I feel you have more control over the characters.
